Story
With NIPÅSEN hat and coat stand, you can quickly and easily organise your jackets, coats, and other things in the hallway. What makes it stand out from all our previous coat racks is that even assembling it is easy as pie.
”The package you bring home from the store is only 60 centimetres long”, says Muthu Sankaran, one of our engineers from the team that created NIPÅSEN. Muthu takes out all the parts from the packaging and shows how you can click them together into a stable 180-centimetre coat rack in just a few minutes. The hooks are at two different heights, so even the youngest can help tidy up.
Stronger construction with dowels
The quick assembly is possible because we minimised the number of screws. Muthu and the team aimed to find a faster and simpler way to join the parts and tested different ideas, some originating from classic craft techniques.
“The solution was a metal dowel that clicks into a hole and slides into place. After refining the idea, we discovered that this way of joining two parts also makes the construction stronger compared to using screws. And the assembly becomes completely invisible from the outside”, says Muthu, stroking the smooth metal surface.
Fewer screws and easier assembly
Our team wasn’t able to completely eliminate screws this time. To mount the hat and coat stand’s base, you still have to get the screwdriver. But the good news is that there are only a few screws to keep track of.
And Muthu is convinced that the metal dowels are here to stay.
“Now, we want to continue reducing the number of screws, making many more products easier to pack and simpler for you to assemble.”
